What's Dallas' primary selling point in free agency?
The Dallas Mavericks will look to rebuild their team on the fly (again) this summer in free agency. Instead of developing their own talent and playing the long game, Mark Cuban has firmly decided rolling the dice every July is the better way to go.
Here's The Dallas Morning News' Tim Cowlishaw on why that may be a problem:
"Question: Do you see the expected NBA lockout in 2017 to increase the attractiveness of the fifth-year option LAC & POR can offer DeAndre Jordan and LaMarcus Aldridge or do the Mavs have a trump card to play by offering a player option next summer when all players want to be in free agency bonanza of the huge cap increase?
[Cowlishaw]: They all want to be free next summer when the cap goes to $90 million. But again what's the selling point for the Mavericks? Having an owner who's on Shark Tank and is going to be in the next Sharknado movie isn't that great of a card to play."
It's both true and not. Dallas is located in Texas, where there's no individual income tax—a big draw for max-contract NBA talent like Dwight Howard and LeBron James (who did the same thing in Florida).
They also have Dirk Nowitzki and Rick Carlisle, a highly respected tandem that's built for playoff basketball in so many ways. Dallas may not be the favorite player in free agency, but they definitely stand a good chance at bringing in some big names. Even if it is a risky strategy.
