During Denver’s first preseason game, starting shooting guard Gary Harris left the game with an injury. Harris reportedly partially tore a muscle in his groin, and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.

With Denver’s season opener less than three weeks away, what does this mean for the Nuggets?

This off season Denver drafted two shooting guards in the first round of the draft. With the 7th pick they drafted sharp shooter Jamal Murray. And with the 19th pick they drafted former Florida St star Malik Beasley.

After Gary left Monday’s game it gave minutes to both rookies at the shooting guard spot and both took advantage. In 17 minutes Murray scored 9 points, with 3 rebounds, and an assist. In just 10 minutes Beasley shot 100% scoring 9 points, along with 2 rebounds and an assist.

In his absence, both rookies will likely be given more time to earn their role on their roster.

Last year’s scoring sensation Will “The Thrill” Barton will also likely see more playing time in Harris’s absence. On Nuggets media day Barton said that he wants to be a starter in the NBA. Look for Barton to use this extra playing time to try and prove he’s good enough to start.

It is still unknown who will start at shooting guard for the remainder of Denver’s preseason. It will likely go to Barton, but look for Murray and Beasley to try to earn the spot.

The news of Gary’s injury is sad for Denver fans. Luckily the Nuggets are deep with young talent at the two guard spot.

It will be fun to see which young players step up and make a name for themselves. Denver’s starting shooting guard spot is still wide open.
