The 23-year-old Smith, in his sixth season with the Atlanta Hawks, passed Shaquille O'Neal as the youngest to reach the milestone when he rejected a shot by Washington's Gilbert Arenas with about 4:30 remaining in Friday night's game.

The block set up a fast break, capped by Smith's left-handed dunk.

O'Neal was 24 years old when he reached 900 blocks. Smith's 24th birthday is Dec. 5.
