Report: 'There is optimism' Rose could play in regular-season opener

Derrick Rose is out indefinitely at the moment, after suffering a fractured orbital bone at practice as a result of taking an elbow to the face.

While the injury will require surgery, it's at least possible that Rose could be ready to play on opening night, according to a report from K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune.

Absences following surgery for orbital fractures have run the gamut recently with players missing anywhere from five to 28 games.

A source said there is optimism Rose will be ready for the Oct. 27 regular-season opener against LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

We've seen players with broken noses or similar face fracture injuries wear a mask for protection while playing through the healing process, and that's undoubtedly what Rose would need to do in this case in order to return so soon.
