Report: Billy Donovan targeting Monty Williams for coaching staff

Published May. 18, 2015 9:52 a.m. ET

There's a reason why, despite never having coached in the NBA, Steve Kerr had so much success in his first year with the Golden State Warriors, and it wasn't Stephen Curry. Kerr assembled an all-star assistant coaching staff, including Ron Adams and Alvin Gentry. What Kerr lacked in experience, his assistants more than compensated.

This is a lesson Billy Donovan is apparently taking to heart as he prepares for his first season as an NBA head coach, as he's reportedly targeting former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Monty Williams for his staff, per Yahoo! Sports.

"Donovan has a targeted interest in several potential candidates, including ex-New Orleans Pelicans coach Monty Williams, Chicago Bulls assistant Andy Greer and Portland Trail Blazers assistant Nate Tibbetts, league sources said."

This would be a terrific get for Donovan. Before Williams coached in New Orleans, he was an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs and Gregg Popovich. Though Williams didn't have the best results as a head coach, he has all the qualities one desires in an assistant from an experience, development and strategy standpoint.
