New York Knicks: What Happened To The Pride Of Being A Knick?

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:50 a.m. ET

Head coach Jeff Hornacek and small forward Carmelo Anthony had a poignant question for the New York Knicks: where is the pride?

A New York Knicks jersey was once viewed as something of a badge of honor. The players donning the orange and blue played with a sense of purpose and responsibility; a commitment to taking pride in representing the city they play in.

Throughout the 2016-17 NBA regular season, one question has persisted: what happened to the New York pride?

New York is coming off of a 121-107 home loss to the 18-36 Los Angeles Lakers. It was a blowout loss at Madison Square Garden that resulted in a vast majority of Knicks fans questioning what the team was playing for.

According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek asked one simple question: where is the pride?

“You’ve got to play for some pride,” the coach said after the game. “If you’re just going to come out and just play basketball, then you’re in the wrong level.”

Franchise player Carmelo Anthony offered a similar take.

“Pride, effort, however you want to put it, it just wasn’t there,” Anthony said. “My word is effort. Coach’s word is pride. It just wasn’t there tonight.”

That’s the question of the hour for a Knicks team that’s in danger of missing the playoffs.
