After days of speculation, both the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls officially announced a trade involving Michael Carter-Williams and Tony Snell on Monday morning.

At this point it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody, but in a world where nothing is set in stone until it’s officially announced, there would still have been plenty waiting on official confirmation from the teams involved that Michael Carter-Williams and Tony Snell would be swapping cities for the new season.

That announcement finally arrived on Monday morning, with the delay likely coming down to physicals and the need for an official call with the NBA to ratify the deal, as both the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls took to Twitter and almost simultaneously confirmed the trade that has been the talk of the NBA since Saturday.

Both teams provided accompanying statements, as is common practice when a trade occurs, albeit that both were scant on detail beyond the respective numbers and achievements that both players have racked up to date.

Milwaukee’s statement didn’t provide comment from John Hammond or Jason Kidd on either player at the time of posting, simply stating:

“Milwaukee Bucks General Manager John Hammond announced today that the team has acquired fourth-year guard Tony Snell from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for fourth-year guard Michael Carter-Williams.”

From Chicago’s perspective, there was a little more insight as general manager Gar Forman provided a quick note on the addition of Carter-Williams:

“We’re excited to add Michael to our roster,” said Chicago Bulls General Manager Gar Forman. “He is a two-way player who adds versatility and depth to our backcourt rotation.”

With the Bucks having an obvious hole in their wing rotation since losing Khris Middleton to injury and the Bulls lacking proven depth options at point guard behind Rajon Rondo, the motivations for both teams to pull the trigger on this trade are clear.

Although both Snell and Carter-Williams had previously been seen as potential starters or key contributors on their respective former teams, they had largely fallen out of favor with their coaches and fanbases alike in recent times.

With both men facing up to the prospect of hitting free agency next summer, a straight swap between the two teams provided everyone with a change of scenery and a chance to start afresh and earn their next big contract with a new team in the coming season.

Both players are eligible for extensions prior to October 31, and although it has been rumored that Milwaukee will explore that possibility, it’s expected that the Bulls will make Carter-Williams play out the season before making any longer term commitments.

With reactions to the deal among analysts and fans divided, to say the least, it may take some time to establish who, if anybody, is the real winner from this deal.
