Lakers GM Kupchak hopes his coaching search isn't lengthy

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak doesn't think his search for a new coach will take a long time.

Kupchak told the Lakers' official television network Monday that he ''doesn't anticipate this dragging into summer.''

The Lakers fired Byron Scott on Sunday night after the two worst seasons in the 16-time NBA champion franchise's history. Los Angeles went 38-126 under Scott, including 17-65 this season.

Kupchak says he has a large list of candidates, but he expects to narrow the field quickly.

That hasn't always been the case in Los Angeles. The Lakers' last coaching search lasted nearly three months between Mike D'Antoni's resignation and Scott's hiring in 2014.

The Lakers already missed out on Tom Thibodeau and Scott Brooks, two respected veteran coaches who signed with other teams.
