Knicks' Shumpert out with torn ACL

Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert will miss the rest of the postseason after tearing a left knee ligament in the third quarter of New York's Game 1 100-67 loss to the Miami Heat on Saturday.

The Knicks announced Shumpert also tore his lateral meniscus. Surgery will be scheduled in New York and Shumpert is expected to miss approximately six to eight months.

Shumpert, who started the final 17 games of the regular season after Jeremy Lin had knee surgery, was bringing the ball up the right sideline and tried to dribble behind his back when he pulled up and immediately grabbed at his left knee. He was brought into the Knicks' locker room for evaluation and later to a hospital for an MRI.

Shumpert took a bad step as he dribbled against Mario Chalmers and crumpled to the court, writhing in pain and holding his left knee.

He was carried off the court by fellow rookies Josh Harrellson and Jerome Jordan. One source told the New York Post that Shumpert heard a pop when he fell to the floor.

"My prayers go out for him. We know he's not going to be with us," Carmelo Anthony said of Shumpert, even before the diagnosis was known.

Lin did extra cutting drills Saturday before the game, and if there is a very long series, he could make a quicker return than his six-week timetable, the Post reported.
