New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony was called a leader for his recent decision to rescind his support of the Bedford-Union Armory project.

The New York Knicks have a leader to be proud of in Carmelo Anthony. However you may feel about his NBA career, there’s no denying that Anthony has done great things for underprivileged and victimized people off the court.

At a critical turning point, Anthony has made sure to let people know that he wasn’t just doing it for show.

The Bedford-Union Armory project has been a source of controversy in Brooklyn, New York. The Carmelo Anthony Foundation came under fire for being a potential financial contributor.

According to Erin Durkin of The New York Daily News, Bertha Lewis, who founded the Black Institute, applauded Anthony for pulling his support for the controversial project.

“Carmelo is our hero,” said Bertha Lewis, founder of the Black Institute, who led the push to get the basketball player to drop out.

“The whole project is bad. It wasn’t just Slate,” Lewis said. “The whole project needs to scrapped, and the administration needs to start over.”

Lewis expounded upon why it was so important for Anthony to take a different side on the Bedford-Union Armory issue.

“It was so galling — here’s a couple of basketball courts, a swimming pool, and a slice of watermelon,” Lewis said. “Now they can’t use [Anthony] anymore with the black community, and that’s what they were doing.”

It’s hard not to respect Anthony for being a man of conviction and principles.

For those unfamiliar, Slate Property Group intended to turn the Bedford-Union Armory into 300 apartments, 12 townhouses, and a sports center. The concern amongst locals, however, is that the apartments will be priced out of a reasonable price range.

Having learned of Slate’s history of gentrifying its projects, City Hall successfully pressured the SPG to sell its stake in the development.

Anthony pulling his support implies a positive change could be on the horizon.

Anthony’s philanthropy has been one of the hottest topics of 2016. He spoke out against police brutality, visited the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and helped organize a meeting between citizens and police officers in Los Angeles.

The Bedford-Union Armory project was a stain on his proverbial resume, but that will no longer be the case.

Anthony has pulled his financial support of the project and backed those who would rather see the locals helped than financially exiled.
