Detroit Pistons claim point guard Beno Udrih off waivers

The Detroit Pistons may have solved their backup and third string point guard issues after claiming point guard Beno Udrih off waivers Monday afternoon.
The Detroit Pistons have had point guard issues galore since apparently solving them with the signing of Ish Smith this summer. Starting point guard Reggie Jackson went down with knee tendinitis and is expected to miss the first 15-20 games of the regular season, which moved Smith into the starting spot.
That left a hole at the backup point guard spot while Jackson recovers, and while Ray McCallum and Lorenzo Brown battled for that position during training camp and the preseason, it appears the Pistons have found a different solution.
Per Shams Charania of The Vertical, the Pistons have claimed free agent point guard Beno Udrih off waivers.
Last season Udrih played 36 games for the Miami Heat, averaging 4.4 points and 2.5 assists in 16 minutes per game. He didn’t make the Heat roster and was cut as they brought their roster in compliance with the NBA’s requirement of 15 players before Monday’s deadline.
This leaves the Pistons at 16 players and will require them to trade or waive a player. Ray McCallum (the presumptive winner of the third point guard battle) would be the likely option, but we’ll have to wait and see to be sure.
