Craig Sager to receive Jimmy V Perseverance Award at ESPYS

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:48 p.m. ET

TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager will receive the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYS on July 13.

Sager has continued to work as he receives treatment for leukemia. The award is named for the late North Carolina State coach and broadcaster Jim Valvano, who gave his famous ''Don't ever give up'' speech at the 1993 ESPYS while battling cancer.

Sager and Valvano became close when they worked together on basketball at the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba. Sager keeps a copy of that speech on his phone and would play it back sometimes during long days in the hospital.

The 64-year-old Sager was first diagnosed with leukemia in 2014 and said in March that he was no longer in remission.

TNT announced the award on its pregame show Tuesday night before Sager worked Game 4 of the Western Conference finals.
