Colin Cowherd knows why the Lakers made a mistake hiring Luke Walton

The Los Angeles Lakers appeared to hit a home run by landing former Warriors assistant Luke Walton as their new head coach. Walton has ties to the Lakers as a player, helping them win two titles.

But not everyone is sold on Walton leading the Lake Show back to prominence. Colin Cowherd believes Walton's inexperience could be his undoing in Los Angeles.

"He's never been a head coach for any extended period," Cowherd said on "The Herd" on Monday. "He's never really been an assistant coach for any extended period. And the Lakers -- a team that needs to win some games with coaching -- just hired a 36-year-old. And he's a young 36-year-old.

"They need a Stan Van Gundy. They need a Brad Stevens. They need an Erik Spoelstra. They need somebody with experience."

Walton filled in as head coach of the Warriors to start this season due to Steve Kerr suffering a setback from back surgery. Walton went 39-4 as the interim coach, including a 24-0 start.

Cowherd believes the Lakers are relying too heavily on their history, bringing back players who have helped the team win titles in the past but might not aid them in the future.

"They keep reaching back into their history," Cowherd said. "Let's bring Metta World Peace. Let's bring Byron Scott. Let's go sign Kobe to a massive contract. How's that working out? It's not working out at all."
