76ers hire Barzilai as director of analytics

Published Nov. 2, 2012 8:29 p.m. ET

The Philadelphia 76ers have hired Aaron Barzilai as their analytics director.

Barzilai had served as analytics consultant for the Memphis Grizzlies since 2009. He was the sole advanced analytics consultant for the team and reported directly to general manager Chris Wallace. He assessed potential transactions, including trades, free-agent signings and draft picks.

Barzilai is the founder of BasketballValue.com, a website which presents adjusted and unadjusted plus/minus ratings for players and units to illustrate the impact a player has on the court as well as on a team's offensive and defensive efficiency. He also has contributed content to 82games.com.

Sixers GM Tony DiLeo is a firm believer in analytics and has even devised his own numbers-crunching system to rank and scout players.
