Recent New York Yankees rumors have continued to surround Brian McCann and the Atlanta Braves. Could a deal happen this offseason?

Throughout the wild trade deadline and into August, New York Yankees rumors have been about Brian McCann being linked to the Atlanta Braves. McCann spent a good chunk of his career with the Braves before signing as a free agent with the Yankees.

Due to the emergence of catcher Gary Sanchez, McCann has been mostly a designated hitter for the Yankees. In addition to Sanchez, Austin Romine has also had a nice season, and would be a fine backup to Sanchez moving forward.

The Yankees have made it clear that they would like to move forward with their youth. If general manager Brian Cashman could have dealt McCann this season, he surely would have liked too. According to Jon Heyman, the Braves will still be interested in McCann this offseason, as they look to add a veteran catcher.

Trading McCann will be tricky for the Yankees, as he is owed a lot of money still. According to Heyman, the Braves are willing to take about half of his remaining contract. If that is the case, the Yankees will certainly have to consider it, even if it means they don’t get many prospects in return.

In addition to the Braves being interested in McCann, they will also be looking at some free agent catchers. This offseason will present them with a pretty good class of players to improve at that position. Wilson Ramos, Jason Castro, and Matt Wieters will all be free agents, and that can help the Braves gain leverage on the Yankees.

Due to a full no-trade clause, McCann can also deny any trade to the Braves or another team. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see what the plan is for McCann this offseason. The Yankees will surely be trying hard to trade him. The question is how much will a team be willing to take off his contract.
