Watch: Bartolo Colón beats out an infield single (sort of)

Bartolo Colón had his worst outing of the season on Wednesday, but he managed to help the Mets in another way despite his troubles on the mound.

Leading off the bottom of the third for the Mets, Colón hit a high-bouncing ball in front of the plate that Cardinals Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina would normally handle easily.

Nonetheless, Colón, who is listed at 5-foot-11, 283 pounds, hustled down the line about as fast as he could and beat the throw to first.

However, since Molina uncharacteristically had difficulty fielding the ball, the official scorer ruled the play an error, robbing Colón of what would have been his second hit of the season.

The play was the only consolation for the 17-year veteran, who was shellacked by the Cardinals for 11 hits and eight earned runs, including two home runs, in a shortened 4.1-inning outing.

The storyline heading into the game centered upon Colón's recent dominance of the Cardinals, whom he was 3-0 against with a 1.17 earned run average since 2013 before Wednesday's slugfest.

The outing was Colón's worst since Apr. 13 of last year, when he gave up nine earned runs on 11 hits, four of which were home runs, to the Angels.

As he turns 42 this Sunday, Colón is likely in the final year of his extensive major-league career, but he can now retire knowing that he beat out a ball hit to a Gold Glove fielder, a feat he almost certainly never could have imagined he'd achieve.

Even if it took him five seconds to get down the line.
