Valentine withdraws as candidate for O's

If Bobby Valentine is going to resume his career as a major-league manager, it won't be with the Baltimore Orioles.

Valentine removed his name as a candidate for the job Wednesday, the same day the Florida Marlins fired manager Fredi Gonzalez and contacted Valentine to gauge his interest in the job.

Valentine's agent told Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail that Valentine was no longer available.

``We will abide by his wishes and keep him out of consideration,'' MacPhail said.

Valentine currently works for ESPN. He interviewed with the Orioles earlier this month.

MacPhail met with Buck Showalter on Wednesday to discuss the managerial job, which opened after Dave Trembley was fired on June 4. Juan Samuel, who is serving as interim manager, is also a candidate.

MacPhail described his meeting with Showalter as ``enjoyable.''

``It's not a process that anyone enjoys doing, but like anything, there are some silver linings to it,'' MacPhail said.

Showalter, 54, is also a baseball analyst for ESPN. He has managed the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers.

``Experience is something we value because there's not going to be a lot of it in the dugout among the players,'' MacPhail said.

There is no timetable on the search, mainly because the rebuilding Orioles own the worst record in the American League and are more inclined to take a long-term view.

``I think we want to get the pick right, whether it's in two weeks or two months,'' MacPhail said. ``Given our place in the standings, I don't think urgency is as paramount as it might be to a team like the Marlins.''

Former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge has also interviewed for the job.
