Twins sign Clay Condrey, release Bobby Keppel

Right-handed reliever Clay Condrey and the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

The Twins also released righty reliever Bobby Keppel.

The 34-year-old Condrey became a free agent in December, when the Philadelphia Phillies declined to offer him a contract for 2010. He went 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 42 innings last year for the NL champions. Condrey walked 14 and struck out 25.

Condrey missed a large chunk of last season because of a strained oblique muscle on his left side, but he returned in mid-September and didn't allow a walk or an earned run in his final nine appearances.

``This guy's battle-tested. He's been in two good pennant races with the Phillies and held up well,'' general manager Bill Smith said.

Over parts of six major league seasons, two with the San Diego Padres, Condrey has a record of 18-12 with a 4.10 ERA.

Keppel will play in Japan. He had a 4.83 ERA in 54 innings with 21 walks and 32 strikeouts last season for the Twins, picking up his first major league victory with a scoreless 12th inning in their tiebreaker win over Detroit to win the AL Central title.

``We're sorry to lose Keppel, but it's a good opportunity for him in Japan. He's excited about it,'' Smith said. ``We weren't going to do it if we didn't have a replacement.''
