Twins call up left-hander Perkins to start

The Minnesota Twins called up left-hander Glen Perkins from Triple-A Rochester to start Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Perkins was filling in for Kevin Slowey, who has a sore elbow.

It was Perkins' first appearance with the Twins this season after making 43 starts over the previous two, going 18-11. He was optioned at the end of March after battling a back problem in spring training and is 4-9 with a 6.08 ERA in 23 starts for the minor-league club.

The Twins optioned shortstop Trevor Plouffe to make room for Perkins after Tuesday's game.

Slowey is expected to start Sunday against Oakland.
