Trout hits 2 HRs to lead Angels past Astros, 6-3

Published Apr. 17, 2015 11:37 p.m. ET

HOUSTON (AP) Mike Trout was more concerned about getting a win than setting a record.

Trout homered twice to become the youngest player in history with 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases, and Los Angeles beat the Astros 6-3 on Friday night.

''I'm just glad we got the `W,''' Trout said.

Trout, who has 104 steals, hit a two-run shot off Astros starter Roberto Hernandez on a full count in the sixth inning for his 100th homer, giving the Angels a 3-1 lead. At 23 years and 253 days old, Trout became the youngest player in history to reach the feat - breaking the mark set by Alex Rodriguez (23 years, 309 days old).

After the Astros tied it with single runs in the sixth and seventh, Trout hit a three-run shot against reliever Chad Qualls (0-1) in the eighth.

The homers gave Trout three for the season and his fourth career multihomer game - the first since last Sept. 13 against Houston.

''Mike got big hits all night for us,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ''Good day for Mike; they were all clutch.''

Angels starter Jered Weaver was also impressed by Trout's latest feat.

''Guy's unbelievable,'' Weaver said. ''Nothing he does surprises me anymore. He's doing things no one's ever done before.''

Cesar Ramos (1-0) got the last two outs of the seventh to pick up the win and Huston Street pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

Kole Calhoun went 2 for 3 with a triple, a walk and three runs scored for Los Angeles in his first start since missing the previous four with tightness in his right calf.

Weaver gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. He seemed to tire his last two innings, and conceded the humidity might have played a factor. Houston was under a flash flood warning for much of the game and several Angels players said water was leaking from the roof in the outfield.

''A win is always a big step in the right direction,'' Weaver said. ''I was sweating pretty good there in the fifth inning.''

Hernandez gave up three runs and three hits while striking out six in six innings for Houston.

Evan Gattis went 2-for-4 with a double for the Astros, who fell to 2-5 at home.

Calhoun tripled to lead off the fourth inning and scored on Matt Joyce's sacrifice fly to put the Angels up 1-0.

Jose Altuve drove in a run in the fifth to tie the score at 1-1, and Jason Castro homered in the bottom of the sixth to keep Houston close after Trout's first homer.

The Astros loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh off relievers Jose Alvarez and Vinnie Pestano, and George Springer tied it at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly.

MEETING WITH HAMILTON

Scioscia met with Josh Hamilton this week for the first time in months and said he isn't sure when the star will return to the team.

Scioscia said he had dinner with Hamilton on Wednesday night when the Angels arrived in Houston. It was the first time Scioscia had seen Hamilton since the slugger self-reported a relapse into substance abuse.

Scioscia says the former AL MVP is making progress in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery.

The manager declined to discuss many details of their meeting, except to say that Hamilton is running and hitting and that ''there's still some work he has to do before he's ready to play a game.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Angels: RHP Garrett Richards, who is recovering from left knee surgery, threw a bullpen session, and Scioscia said he will decide Saturday whether Richards gets another rehab assignment or pitches. ''There's no doubt he's close,'' Scioscia said.

Astros: RHP Brad Peacock was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 15 with a left intercostal strain. ''It's unbelievably frustrating,'' Peacock said of the injury, which he first felt during Tuesday's start against Oakland. Peacock was coming back from offseason hip surgery. ... Houston recalled RHP Asher Wojciechowski from Triple-A Fresno. Wojciechowski was sent down Monday night after pitching four shutout innings in relief to make room for Peacock on the roster.

UP NEXT

Angels: LHP C.J. Wilson (1-1) takes the mound aiming to shake off a shaky start in which he gave up seven runs in 5 2-3 innings in a loss to Kansas City on Sunday.

Astros: LHP Dallas Keuchel (1-0) looks to continue to build on the success attained his breakthrough 2014 season. He tossed seven innings in his each of his previous two starts.
