Steven Matz next in line to join Mets' talented young pitching staff
Steven Matz is poised to be the New York Mets' next young ace, but there's only one problem: The Mets have no open spots to insert him into the rotation.
With Dillon Gee returning from the disabled list, the Mets already have a six-man rotation, which means that it's going to take a trade, an injury, or a relegation of one of their current starters for the team to have the opportunity to call up Matz, who is dominating in the minors.
"It's like taking a big league guy and throwing him against a rookie ball team," a Pacific Coast League talent evaluator told the New York Post of Matz. "He just dominates every night he goes out. He's done everything he's supposed to do at Triple-A, and it's a lot easier to evaluate a pitcher in this league, because if they are as good as Matz is in the Pacific Coast League, he is pretty damn good. They don't hit the ball against him."
The 24-year-old lefty is yet another young starter poised to do big things in the majors alongside fellow youngsters Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Matt Harvey.
In 10 starts in Triple-A this season, Matz is 6-3 with 68.1 innings pitched, 70 strikeouts, and a 1.98 earned run average.
While he's undoubtedly eager to join the Mets' big-league team, he is said to understand why he has yet to be called up.
"I think he realizes, he sees everybody that is up there and knows there is no place to put him," an organizational source told the New York Post. "If he was going to lose interest, he would have lost it, I think, three or four starts ago."
