Source: Angels near deal with starter Pineiro

The Angels are close to finalizing a contract with free agent pitcher Joel Pineiro, one major league source confirmed to FOXSports.com.

Newsday first reported Wednesday night that the right-hander had chosen to sign with the Angels.

Pineiro was regarded as perhaps the top free agent starter left on the market. He had drawn strong interest from both the Dodgers and Mets after going 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA in 32 starts for St. Louis.

The Angels’ rotation should be complete now, with Pineiro joining Joe Saunders, Ervin Santana, Jered Weaver and Scott Kazmir.
