Should the Mariners cut ties with Willie Bloomquist?

Published May. 18, 2015 9:52 p.m. ET

At age 37, Willie Bloomquist is at a crossroads in his Major League career. Employed by the Seattle Mariners, Bloomquist rarely plays these days (he's appeared in just 15 games so far this season), and he primarily plays a position (shortstop) at which the Mariners are very deep.

As Lookout Landing suggested in a new piece, it might be time for the Mariners to cut ties with Bloomquist, simply because there isn't much room for him on the roster.

Seattle boasts a pair of young planers, Chris Taylor and Brad Miller, who are both viable candidates for 'everyday shortstop' duties. Miller, recently designated by manager Lloyd McClendon as a 'utility' player, was named the A.L. Player of the Week on Monday. That leaves Taylor as the club's everyday shortstop. The Mariners also have Ketel Marte, a top prospect, turning heads at the Triple-A level.

All this to say: Is Bloomquist on the way out? In his 29 at bats in 2015, he's slashing a paltry .179/.207/.179 and has had an iffy injury history throughout his career.

If it's time for the Mariners to let him go, however, it would seem likely that another club would be interested in his services as a 'back of the bench'- type role.
