Rockies sign RHP John Maine to minor league deal

The Colorado Rockies brought another veteran starter into spring training, signing former New York Mets right-hander John Maine to a minor league deal.

Maine is expected to report Saturday to the Rockies' new complex.

The 29-year-old Maine has a history of shoulder problems, making only nine starts last season. He had arthroscopic surgery in July to clean out scar tissue.

The Rockies have a deep rotation this spring, with Ubaldo Jimenez and Jorge De La Rosa the likely top two starters. Jhoulys Chacin, Aaron Cook, Jason Hammel and Felipe Paulino also are competing for starting jobs.

Maine spent five seasons with the Mets after being selected by the Baltimore Orioles as a sixth-round pick in 2002.
