The New York Yankees and general manager Brian Cashman are close to agreeing to a new contract, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

Cashman, who has been the team's GM since 1998, is in the final year of three-year, $9 million deal.

"The wheels have been in motion for some time," a source told the newspaper. "He'll be back."

During Cashman's 17-year tenure with the club, the Yankees have won four World Series titles, five American League pennants and 12 AL East championships. However, New York has missed the playoffs the past two seasons -- the first time that has happened since the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
