Report: Mets 'to make a strong push for Zobrist'

With Daniel Murphy declining his qualifying offer, the New York Mets will need to replace his production in the lineup and on the field. They have internal options in Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada, but they don't have the versatility that Murphy had -- Murphy played every infield position except shortstop last season.

Enter Ben Zobrist.

At 34, the versatile Zobrist is older than most other options, but remains intriguing because of his ultra-utilityman status and consistent bat.

According to the New York Post, the Mets have already reached out to the Zobrist camp:

"Instead, it’s the Mets that figure to make a strong push for Zobrist, whose versatility would allow them to use him at second base and in the outfield. They are among the teams that already have formally reached out to Zobrist’s agent, Alan Nero."

Given Zobrist's age, it's unlikely he will get anything more than a four-year contract with many experts predicting something in the $60 million range.

In 2015, Zobrist hit .276 with a .356 on-base percentage and 13 home runs.
