Rays add relief pitcher Peralta to bullpen

Published Dec. 17, 2010 2:36 p.m. ET

The Tampa Bay Rays moved to bolster a depleted bullpen, agreeing to a $925,000, one-year contract with free agent reliever Joel Peralta.

The 34-year-old right-hander went 1-0 with a 2.02 ERA in 39 appearances for the Washington Nationals last season. He's also pitched for the Angels, Royals and Rockies during his career.

Tampa Bay is rebuilding a bullpen that was one of the keys to winning the AL East last season. They've already lost Joaquin Benoit and Randy Choate through free agency. All-Star closer Rafael Soriano, Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour are expected to sign elsewhere, too.
