Phillies Week in Review: A Glimpse of the Future
The Phillies had a subpar week, finishing with a 3-4 record. The team took two of three against the Marlins, but then dropped 3 of 4 against the division leading Nats.
The biggest story this week was that the Phillies called up two of their top prospects, speedy centerfielder Roman Quinn and slugging catcher Jorge Alfaro.
Quinn made his debut in yesterday’s loss to the Nationals. He didn’t notch a hit, but managed a walk and made a great defensive play in the outfield.
Alfaro had a pinch-hit single last night, and is expected to start Tuesday against the Pirates.
Let’s take a look at who was surging and who was struggling this week for the Fightins.
Cesar Hernandez had a nice week after some recent struggles. Cesar hit .393 with two stolen bases.
Peter Bourjos also had a nice bounce back. He hit .304 this week with a homer, a double and a triple.
Freddy Galvis didn’t hit for average this week, but he sure hit for power. Freddy batted just .259, but managed two homers and six RBI.
Cameron Rupp had a rough week at the plate. Rupp hit just .188 with eight strikeouts in 16 at bats with one homer.
Ryan Howard also struggled. The Big Piece hit just .176 with four strikeouts in 12 at bats. Like Rupp, Howard did manage a homer.
Maikel Franco had a very poor week at the plate. Maikel had just one hit in ten at bats.
Aaron Altherr had a dreadful week at the dish. Altherr managed just one hit in 15 at bats with seven strikeouts.
A number of the Phillies relievers had a great week out of the pen. Jeanmar Gomez, David Hernandez, Edubray Ramos, Michael Mariot and Joely Rodriguez combined for 9.1 scoreless innings and eleven strikeouts.
Alec Asher had a fantastic season debut for the Phils during Thursday’s loss to the Nats. Asher threw six scoreless innings and gave up just two hits. Asher had been suspended for 80 games early in the year after testing positive for PEDs.
Jerad Eickhoff had a strong week out of the rotation. Eickhoff gave up just two earned runs in 12 innings pitched with nine strikeouts.
Adam Morgan also pitched well this week. Morgan gave up just three earned runs in 12 innings pitched with seven strikeouts.
Hector Neris struggled out of the pen this week. Neris gave up three earned runs in just three innings pitched.
Colton Murray also had a poor week out the bullpen. Murray gave up two earned runs in just 0.2 innings pitched.
Patrick Schuster and Severino Gonzalez also had poor showings out of the pen this week. The duo combined to give up four earned runs in just 1.1 innings pitched
