Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels says he'll miss Opening Day start

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels said he won't be able to make his Opening Day start after feeling discomfort in his pitching arm during the offseason.

Hamels, who pitched the Phillies' first game last season, said he no longer is feeling any pain or discomfort, but is ''eight to 10 days'' behind the rest of the pitchers in camp. Phillies pitchers and catchers reported to camp on Wednesday; they hold their first official workout on Thursday.

Hamels initially said he felt discomfort in the shoulder, but the injury was diagnosed as biceps tendinitis. He called the ailment a ''kink in the system'' after he rebooted his throwing program in mid-to-late November.

''It was cranking back up on top of the weight lifting I was doing,'' Hamels said. ''I think it was just getting into the exercises too fast, too soon.''

Hamels is hoping to throw his first bullpen session in the next eight to 10 days.
