Padres place Upton Jr. on bereavement list, recall Amarista

SAN DIEGO (AP) Outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. has been placed on the bereavement list by the San Diego Padres.

The move was announced Friday.

Manager Andy Green says the left fielder will miss the three games this weekend against the San Francisco Giants and will then likely rejoin the team Monday in St. Louis. His brother, Justin Upton, was placed on the bereavement list by the Detroit Tigers.

To take his place on the roster, infielder-outfielder Alexi Amarista was recalled from Triple-A El Paso.

The Padres also recalled left-hander Buddy Baumann from Triple-A El Paso. A spot was open on the roster after All-Star lefty Drew Pomeranz was traded to Boston on Thursday.
