Nationals' Detwiler out 3 months after hip surgery

Washington Nationals left-hander Ross Detwiler will miss at least three months after undergoing surgery this week to repair torn right hip cartilage.

The procedure was performed Monday by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo.

Detwiler is expected to arrive at the team's spring training headquarters this weekend, a team spokesman said. Detwiler is scheduled to begin a throwing program in three weeks.

The 23-year-old Detwiler was 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA in 15 games, including 14 starts, last year. But a strong September, when he went 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his final four starts, put him in contention for a rotation spot this season.
