Mike Foltynewicz called up to help out in Braves' bullpen
Mike Foltynewicz has returned to the Braves' major-league club, but in a different role than the one he held when he left.
The rookie pitcher was brought back up to throw out of the Braves' bullpen after being sent down to Triple-A while struggling as a starter.
In nine starts in his rookie season, Foltynewicz is 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and 48 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez is unsure how long the right-hander will stay in the role.
"I'm going to leave it wide open," Gonzalez said. "Why not? If we use him two or three times in the next six days and he's doing well, we've got to talk about it."
While the Braves aren't set on keeping him in the majors, they wouldn't hesitate to make room for him in the starting rotation if he proves he can handle the competition.
"If he's doing well, he can stay and somebody else could go," Gonzalez said. "You know how that goes. We're not afraid to do that."
