Mets recieve huge return with Jose Reyes investment
Over the past 12 months, Jose Reyes had been arrested, suspended, and released. At the end of it all, he was with the Mets and in the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
A year ago today, nobody thought Reyes would be back with the Mets. Nobody thought he would leave the Rockies in the first place. However, after a downhill slide that began with his domestic violence arrest, the Mets wound up with one of their best contracts of the season.
Just 10 days after being released by the Rockies, he was signed by the Mets. Another 10 days later he was starting an MLB game. He went on to do great things during the remainder of the season — much more than expected.
One incredible way Reyes produced was in the power department. He began crushing extra-base hits like he had in his prime, many years before. In 2015, Reyes split 116 games between Toronto and Colorado. During that time he hit seven HR and 25 doubles.
He went on to hit three HR and two doubles in just his first six games this season. His season total in just 60 games was eight and 13. Reyes was no stranger to triples either as he hit four. The last time he hit more than four in a season was in 2012, where he hit 12 in 160 games and a league- leading 716 plate appearances.
Reyes had also been one of the driving forces for the Mets down the stretch. During the final month of the season, he had the 2nd most runs and walks of all Mets hitters and had the 3rd most hits and extra-base hits.
He was then one of three Mets hitters to go 0-for-4 against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants. That was how his season ended, in the Wild Card game. But at least he made it to the playoffs with the team he grew up with.
Right now, it’s important that Reyes comes back next season. Where he plays doesn’t matter as long as he can contribute.
If he can keep up the power production and work on bringing up his batting average and lowering his strikeouts, he could have a massive 2017, while being paid the league minimum.
