Mets play host to families of slain New York City police officers
The New York Mets on Friday delivered in a big way to the families of two New York City police officers killed in the line of duty last December.
Relatives and friends of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were shot in Brooklyn on Dec. 20, were hosted at the team's spring training site in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the New York Daily News reports.
A group of 12 people, including the officers' widows, will be guests of the team through Sunday. Ramos' sons, Jaden and Justin, will serve as bat boys for some preseason games.
According to the Daily News, Mets third baseman David Wright, whose father served as a police officer in Virginia, extended the invitation to the families just before Christmas.
"When we found out they were Mets fans, we wanted to invite them to come down here, if they wanted, put on the uniform and hang out for however long they wanted," Wright told the Daily News.
The group met members of the Mets, received a behind-the-scenes tour of the team's training facility and have plans to go miniature golfing and bowling during their visit.
