Mets' Andres Torres out with leg injury
New Mets center fielder Andres Torres is headed to the disabled list and back to the team's spring training facility in Florida after re-injuring his left calf Thursday in New York's season-opening 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.
''I'm going to Port St. Lucie to begin rehabbing,'' Torres said. ''I'm going to see how I feel down there.''
The Mets have an off day Friday, so they will not have to make a roster move until Saturday's game against Atlanta.
Torres limped off the field in the seventh inning after aggravating the calf he originally strained March 20. Torres was chasing Tyler Pastornicky's first big league hit, a one-out triple.
Torres missed two weeks of spring training before returning for an exhibition against the Yankees on Tuesday. On Thursday, he walked and scored in the sixth inning to give the Mets the lead.
New York manager Terry Collins said he didn't think this injury was as bad as the initial strain.
''Still, when you rely on your legs, it's a serious injury,'' Collins said
In the seventh, Pastornicky hit a liner to right-center and Torres took a bad approach on the ball. He failed to make a leaping catch and, after a few strides, he pulled up with a hop step. Torres walked toward the infield where he was met by a trainer.
The Mets acquired Torres from San Francisco for outfielder Angel Pagan.
