The future of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez looked very bright. However, according to Miami talk show host Andy Slater, Fernandez has died in a boating accident. Ken Rosenthal is the first national writer to confirm this.

This is incredibly heartbreaking. Fernandez was a budding star with an extremely bright future. He gave up so much to defect from Cuba, going to jail three times after three failures to leave the country. Fernandez was among the most popular pitchers in Major League Baseball.

His death is eerily similar to that of St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Tavares. Though Tavares died because of his own actions, that doesn’t make his death any less tragic. Fernandez died in a boating accident on Sept. 24.

The Marlins have yet to release a statement on his death, but understandably, they’re processing this information. It came from out of nowhere. Fernandez’s death is just the most recent in a terrible year of 2016. He was arguably the most famous player in recent years to defect from Cuba and likely played a large part in helping Cuba and the United States to have a better relationship.

Fernandez was the staff ace for the Marlins. This is just another heartbreaking event in the history of the Marlins. The Marlins have already canceled their game for today and it has yet to be seen if they will reschedule it. Fernandez’s death was equally as shocking to his teammates as well as fans.

The former Marlins pitcher had a 2.56 career ERA with 38 wins and 17 losses in 76 career starts. Fernandez fought back from a Tommy John surgery to become arguably the best young pitcher in baseball. He had 589 strikeouts in 471 1/3 innings pitched during his career. The 2013 NL Rookie of the Year will be dearly missed.
