Mariners' Robinson Cano breaks toe in Japan Series, out 3-4 weeks
Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has been sidelined 3-4 weeks after breaking the pinkie toe on his right foot while playing Saturday with the MLB All-Stars in the Japan Series.
The Mariners confirmed the initial MLB.com report later on Saturday.
The 32-year-old Cano was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning in the All-Stars game vs. Samurai Japan and went for X-rays, which revealed a non-displaced fracture of his right small toe. Four pitchers combined to no-hit the MLB squad in a 4-0 victory for Samurai.
Under the outlined recovery timeline, Cano is expected to resume baseball activities in mid-December, well before Cano and the Mariners would report to spring training.
Cano signed a 10-year, $240 million contract with Seattle last winter, helping the Mariners to their first winning season since 2009 and the most victories since 2007. He had spent his first nine seasons with the Yankees.
Hayato Sakamoto and Sho Nakata both hit two-run homers and starter Takahiro Norimoto combined with three pitchers on a no-hitter as Japan beat the Major League Baseball All-Stars 4-0 Saturday to take a 3-0 lead in their five-game series.
