The Democrats were able to savor an important victory over the Republicans Thursday -- a dominant 8-2 win in the 50th annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park.

It was Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) who shone on the mound for the Democrats, coming within five outs of a no-hitter, the Dallas Morning News reported.

"He was smokin' out there," said Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas). "He carried the whole team on his back."

Republican coach Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) said the game represented the unusual chance for Democrats and Republicans to unite.

"There's no greater American sport than baseball," Barton told The Washington Post. "It transcends politics, it transcends generations. It's what America's all about."

The Congressional Baseball Game has been held since 1909, and raises money for local charities The Washington Literacy Council and The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington.
