Kirk Nieuwenhuis back with Mets after circuitous route

Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis has traveled across the country this season, but he's right back where he started: with the New York Mets.

Nieuwenhuis was recalled by the Mets on Monday, a few weeks after the club claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

The 27-year-old is no stranger to New York. He played the last four seasons with the Mets before being traded to the Angels earlier in the season.

"It was kind of like a weird dream," Nieuwenhuis said upon rejoining the team.

While he has only received 64 plate appearances this season, Nieuwenhuis has struggled mightily at the plate, hitting .100/.156/.167 with three RBI.

Nonetheless, Manager Terry Collins is hopeful Nieuwenhuis will be able to contribute to the Mets' struggling offense.

"He went down and swung the bat kind of like we knew he would after getting some consistent at-bats," Collins said. "Hopefully, he can give us some offense."
