Jacob deGrom could miss Mets' home opener for birth of his 1st child
The New York Mets starting rotation is arguably the best in baseball. That depth might be needed when the team faces the Phillies in the first game at Citi Field this season.
Hard-throwing righty Jacob deGrom is scheduled to take that hill, but his wife Stacey, who was due to have the couple's first child Tuesday, could go into labor Friday.
If that were to happen, deGrom says you won't see him in New York.
"I'm excited about both," deGrom told reporters Tuesday. "If she calls, then I'll be headed to Florida. But I'm still getting ready to pitch the home opener."
The Mets have a contingency plan in place if deGrom needs to be with his wife, going with either Steven Matz or Bartolo Colon.
The Mets had a similar situation in 2014, with second baseman Daniel Murphy missing the first two games of last season for the birth of his first child.
