Hanley heads home as Red Sox season continues

When the Boston Red Sox traveled to take on the New York Yankees, one member of their team was noticeably absent - outfielder Hanley Ramirez.

Ramirez is currently shut down for the season with a sore right shoulder and will do his rehab in Ft. Lauderdale, instead of with the team.

Interim manager Torey Lovullo says this is a good thing.

“We just thought it would be a good thing for Hanley to start as soon as possible,” Lovullo told the media via the Boston Herald. “He starts on Tuesday."

As the Herald notes, it might look bad for a player making $22 million to not be with the team for the last road trip of the season.

“Well, I think he wanted to start his therapy as soon as possible and we wanted to get him kicked off with his physical therapist in Ft. Lauderdale," Lovullo replied. "That being said, [director of sports medicine] Dan Dyrek will fly down there and make sure it’s a good situation before he comes back home.”

Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara and Clay Buchholz are all shut down for the remainder of the season, but chose to stay with the team for this road trip. Pablo Sandoval is in Boston recovering from pneumonia.

On the season, Hanley finished with a .249 average, 19 home runs and 53 RBI in 105 games.
