Francisco Cervelli breaks hand

Published Apr. 26, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli broke his right hand on Ivan Nova's fifth pitch of the game against Toronto, and two innings later New York's starter walked off the mound with pain in his right elbow.

The Yankees say Cervelli needs surgery and will miss a minimum of six weeks. Nova left his outing against the Blue Jays on Friday night after allowing a single to the second batter of the third inning. He will have an MRI later Friday.

After allowing a ground single up the middle to Rajah Davis, trainer Steve Donohue and manager Joe Girardi immediately ran out to the mound, and Nova walked off without hesitation.

Nova gave up two runs and four hits in two-plus innings.
