Did Terry Collins turn to the wrong pitcher as the left-handed specialist?
Mets manager Terry Collins has turned to reliever Alex Torres as the left-handed specialist since Jerry Blevins was lost with a fractured forearm, but the numbers support the point of view that Sean Gilmartin is the better option.
Gilmartin held left-handed batters to a slash line of .201/.219/.235 while allowing no home runs, walking four and striking out 49 in 2014. Last season, lefties had a slash line of .247/.415/.322 against Torres. He has been having control issues, as his BB/9 rate for this year is at 5.91
Torres’ strength is against right-handed hitters, who he has held to a slash line of .177/.278/.246 over the course of his career. Couple that with Torres’ recent struggles against lefties over his last two outings, and it looks like Gilmartin may be the better choice.
