Despite poor numbers, Orioles encouraged by Bundy's last start

Dylan Bundy is down in Double-A Bowie trying to find his footing after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2013. The 22-year-old broke into the big leagues at 19 in 2012, but has struggled to regain his top-prospect form since.

His last start on Friday is startling in the box score (2+ IP, 6 R, 8 H, 2 SO). Numbers, however, do not tell the whole story, as the Baltimore Orioles were actually encouraged by his performance. Here's what manager Buck Showalter told Steve Melewski of MASN:

"This is why you just don't go off numbers. (Scout) Dean (Albany) said he came out of that stadium feeling so good about Dylan. The numbers, he gave up two or three infield singles, couple squibs, strike three that was called a ball. ... (Albany) said his body language, it was really, really encouraging. Said that looked like Dylan. That is why you have to put eyes on guys and not just go by numbers sometimes."

The Orioles are likely hoping Bundy can get over the hump sooner rather than later; O's starting pitchers have thrown an MLB-worst 303.1 IP this season.
