Colorado Rockies: News and Notes, Including Manager Search

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Here are three random thoughts about the Colorado Rockies as we anticipate the opening of the Arizona Fall League schedule tomorrow. You can read about that and Colorado’s participants by clicking here.

Speaking of Arizona…

Rockies prospect Ryan McMahon made an impact in the Arizona Fall League before the first game was even played.

McMahon won the National League crown in the AFL’s fourth annual Hitting Challenge over the weekend. Cleveland prospect Bradley Zimmer won the overall title.

The Hitting Challenge is a twist on the Home Run Derby, as participants are awarded points for either hitting home runs or targets scattered throughout the field.

All quiet on the Colorado managerial front

There has been very little talk about the next moves for the open Colorado Rockies manager position. We know four coaches under Walt Weiss have been released (read about that here). Other than that, it’s a lot of speculation. There have been rumors of Glenallen Hill and Atlanta Braves first base coach Eddie Perez getting an interview (read more here), but nothing has been confirmed.

With MLB’s postseason in full effect and some possible managerial candidates still with their teams chasing the Fall Classic (as we mentioned here), it’s possible it could be a stretch of speculation and guesswork. We outlined some of those candidates here.

Lock up Ken Bone Night while you can!

Ken Bone won the debate last night … but is he going to get any love from Major League Baseball teams? He absolutely should.

If the St. Louis Cardinals aren’t already planning Ken Bone Night at Busch Stadium in 2017, we really need to talk to their marketing department. The guy had on the red sweater and everything. He could even be part of a bobblehead giveaway next season.

How can Colorado get in on Ken Bone mania? Here’s an idea … I’m thinking the Rockies could send him a purple sweater and see if it takes. Come up with a political science day or night at Coors Field and have Bone throw out the first pitch and take a few selfies (with a disposable camera or not, either works) with fans.
