Chase Utley berates Phillies pitching coach during mound visit
Nothing seemed to go right for the Philadelphia Phillies in a 19-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, which had the Phils' tempers flaring.
By the end of the bottom of the first, the Phillies were trailing 6-0 after starter Jerome Williams gave up six earned runs while only lasting two-thirds of an inning.
The game would see five different Phillies pitchers, the latter of whom was veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur, who came in with the score at 17-3 in the seventh inning.
Francoeur pitched a scoreless seventh, but then got into some trouble when he surrendered three free passes to load the bases in the eighth.
With Francoeur already at 46 pitches, pitching coach Bob McClure paid him a mound visit, presumably to pull him from the game.
However, McClure appeared to ask Francoeur if he was done upon arriving at the mound, which triggered a tirade from veteran infielder Chase Utley, who ostensibly argued that Francoeur was well past his limit and should be replaced.
Despite Utley's disagreement, McClure left Francoeur in the game, who escaped the jam by getting a fly-out to center field.
With his pitching staff struggling tremendously on Tuesday, McClure had a rough day in a variety of manners.
In addition to being chewed out by Utley, he also had trouble contacting the bullpen, as the phone was off the hook in the bullpen (watch here).
His method of notifying the bullpen coach?
Waving a white towel.
