Catcher Derek Norris starts at first base, homers in Padres' win

Published Jun. 18, 2015 7:31 p.m. ET

Padres catcher Derek Norris had a big day on Thursday in the team’s win over the Athletics. His solo home run in the sixth inning put the Padres up 2-0. He also showed his versatility on the field as he played first base. The only other time he had played first base was a game on September 29, 2013 when he was playing for the A’s. Perhaps it was because of his familiarity with the vast foul territory at O.co Coliseum that he made a nice catch of a foul pop fly in the second inning.

Norris may have been more motivated than usual based on a tweet he sent out the previous night.
