Cardinals, Cedeno agree to deal

Published Jan. 28, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

The St. Louis Cardinals added to their infield depth on Monday, reaching agreement with free agent Ronny Cedeno on a one-year, $1.15 million contract.

The deal also includes $850,000 in performance bonuses, bringing the maximum value to $2 million, according to a major league source.

Cedeno, who turns 30 on Feb. 2, likely will compete with Daniel Descalso and Ryan Jackson at second base and also will serve as a backup to Rafael Furcal at shortstop.

Furcal, 35, is coming off a torn elbow ligament and has not appeared in more than 121 games in a season since 2009.

Cedeno spent last season as a backup with the New York Mets, batting .259 with a career-high .741 OPS in 78 games. His career OPS is .659.
