Cardinals 3B Freese leaves Game 3 with calf injury

St. Louis third baseman David Freese is uncertain he'll play in Game 4 of the NL championship series after leaving Game 3 in the fifth inning Monday night with tightness in his right calf.

Pinch-runner Daniel Descalso then made a major mistake in his place, getting doubled off second base to hurt a St. Louis rally.

Freese said he'll test his leg Tuesday afternoon before deciding whether to play in Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.

''I don't think I strained it too bad,'' Freese said. ''I'll check it out tomorrow.''

Freese singled to lead off the fifth in Game 4, getting the Cardinals' first hit off Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu. But the Cardinals' training staff came out to meet him at first base after he apparently tweaked his leg on a swing.

After Freese advanced to second on Matt Adams' single, Descalso emerged from the St. Louis dugout to replace Freese.

Descalso then took off for third base on Jon Jay's tailing fly to shallow left field, and Carl Crawford doubled him up.

Freese was the MVP of the 2011 NLCS and the World Series, setting a major league record with 21 postseason RBIs. After going 1 for 2 in Game 3, he is batting .192 in the postseason, going 5 for 26 with one homer and four RBIs.
