Brewers bolster bullpen, add Saito
The Brewers, continuing their off-season restructuring, reached agreement Monday with free-agent right-hander Takashi Saito on a one- year contract, according to a major-league source.
Saito, 40, will be a late-inning complement to John Axford, the team's second-year closer. The Brewers earlier bolstered their rotation by trading for right-handers Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke.
The amount of Saito's guarantee is not known. But Saito, though appearance and roster bonuses, stands to earn close to his $3.2 million salary last season if his performance is similar to 2010, the source said.
Saito appeared in 56 games for the Braves last season, missing only two weeks with a left hamstring strain. He also appeared in 56 games with the Red Sox the previous year.
When healthy and used properly, Saito generally is quite productive.
He had a 2.83 ERA last season, striking out 69 and walking 17 in 56 innings.
